Dead at One

Little George, my father’s namesake and my nephew, is dead. His birthday was Sunday, October 10th. I sent him a card the beginning of last week because I was worried about mail service between Mexico City and Richmond, VA. He made it to one year and one day. Continue reading

Morel Hunting in Virginia

Well, Virginia is wonderful this time of year. The green is bursting out all over with 70-degrees during the day and down around 50 at night. This is just what you want for morels. If you aren’t hip to these beauties, here’s a pic from the morels.com photo library.

Hiding in plain sight.

(You can find all you need to know about hunting morels there — by region with current reports of finds.) Continue reading

Anna and Big Dick

I’m on my way to Canada to see Uncle Max, but I forgot to write about my sister Anna.

Anna is my younger sister. She’s married to Richard (Big Dick) who works at the DuPont plant as a welder. Since I was all cleaned up for Bethany anyhow, (and I was still driving the Lexus) I finally called her and let her know I was in Richmond. Of course, I got the dinner invite. Continue reading

Bethany Resolved

Things are poppin’. I wanted to get down what happened in my quest while it was fresh in my mind.

It was partly why I started this trip, to see what 15 years had done to her. Continue reading

Richmond Tourist

I haven’t blogged in a while, but it’s coming up on a month now that I’ve been ‘on the move’ and I thought I should catch up.

I was getting a little stir-crazy at the hotel last week, so I did some touring around Richmond. It’s a funny thing. I grew up here, but I’ve never been to most of the tourist attractions. The zoo, the botanical gardens… I do remember a battlefield trip in high school, but it all seemed fresh to me this time around. Continue reading

Richmond and Old Haunts

Well, I made it to Richmond and it’s been almost a week. I’ve been making the rounds and reminiscing. I went by my high school and my first impression was that it had somehow shrunk. I did meet Mr. Robinson, an old teacher (this was Tuesday) and he invited me to judge at the science fair (held yesterday). It was a hoot to suddenly and mysteriously be an adult in a place I had only ever been a teenager. All the kids seem so young and bright eyed. Continue reading
